Anyway, some initial designs:
Since I can't give anything away yet, I'll have to be pretty vague. I started with the most "realistic" design (proper age for animal, proper attire for time etc) then went a little more cartoony after that. There were several different outfits to choose from for the time period and country.
More designs:
Some more outfits and styles. The problem I was having was trying to get the character to look the age it was supposed to be. The problem was that an animal at a certain age looks way different than a human at a certain age. However most people can recognize the age of humans than animals, so I figured it'd be better to make it look the human age. I liked the one in the middle, but it still looked to old. The one on the left is closest to the right age, and I like the style of that one, but the outfit is more descriptive of the time period, and less descriptive of the country.
I decided to take the parts I liked from each design to come up with the final design.

I had found a picture of the animal sitting this way and thought it was the most descriptive of the animal and the age and even the gender~
Here is the final design:
I took the face from the last design (so it'd better convey the age), the outfit from the 3rd (since it was most descriptive of time period and country) and the look of the 5th one because I liked it the most~ Then I added more to the outfit and accessories to better portray the time period and country and gender.
All in all I still don't think she looks the right age, but it's more like an inbetween of the human and animal age. Other than that, I think it's pretty sucessful~
